Author bio
Paula Harrison was born in Bletchley and grew up in Bedfordshire, in England. She started making up stories when she was young and wrote them down long before publication was anything more than a hope. By her own account, writing was always the thing she wanted to do, even if life took her on a longer route first.
After studying English at university, she trained as a primary school teacher. She spent many happy years in classrooms, sharing books, reading aloud, and getting a close-up view of how children respond to humor, suspense, and the simple pleasure of being told a good story. That practical sense of pacing still runs through her books.
She learned from a real audience before she ever had a publishing contract.
Teaching did more than keep her close to stories. It helped her think clearly about language, rhythm, and what makes a chapter work for young readers who may be reading alone one day and listening aloud the next. In interviews, Harrison has said that her experience as both a teacher and a parent shaped the way she judges vocabulary, length, and the point where a story needs to turn the page.
Her first major series, The Rescue Princesses, began with The Secret Promise in 2012. Those books took familiar fairy-tale ingredients, princesses, castles, jewels, and gave them a practical twist. Harrison's princesses are not waiting around to be saved. They sneak out, solve problems, protect animals, and rely on friendship, nerve, and a few ninja moves to get through.
From there, her range kept widening. She wrote the magical creature adventures of The Secret Rescuers, the nighttime superhero stories that begin with Kitty and the Moonlight Rescue, and the darker fantasy quest of Red Moon Rising. She also moved into spookier middle grade territory with Robyn Silver: The Midnight Chimes, about a girl who starts seeing monsters that nobody else can. Across all of these books, readers tend to find fast chapters, clear stakes, and young heroes learning to trust themselves.
Animals keep turning up in her books, and that is no accident.
Harrison has said that her favorite animal is the elephant, though she also loves cats, and she has talked warmly about her own cat, Inky. While creating the Kitty books, she described watching him and wondering what the world might look like through a cat's eyes. That mix of curiosity, affection, and close observation suits her work well. Even in the more magical series, creatures are rarely just decoration. They matter to the story.
A lot of her fiction is built around brave girls who do not feel especially powerful at first. They may be nervous, overlooked, or unsure of themselves, but they usually grow by helping someone smaller or more vulnerable than they are. Palaces, forests, beaches, rooftops, school rooms, and hidden kingdoms all appear in her books, yet so do very ordinary feelings, wanting to fit in, being afraid of the dark, arguing with friends, or trying to do the right thing when adults do not understand yet.
She now lives in Buckinghamshire with her husband and children. She has written more than fifty books, and her stories have reached readers in many countries. When she is not writing, she has spoken about loving sandy beaches and popcorn, which feels fitting for an author whose books are so good at ending with one more chapter.
