Paul Richter Books in Order

Paul Richter is the central figure in James Barrington's longest-running action thriller series. He is a British operative used when a job is too risky, too deniable or too politically awkward for regular channels. His work takes him from intelligence offices to hostile ground, usually with somebody higher up hoping the problem will disappear before it becomes public.

Richter is capable, but he is not a polished fantasy spy.

He has military experience, a blunt manner and a healthy suspicion of authority. He often works for the Foreign Operations Executive, a secretive branch of British intelligence run by Richard Simpson. Simpson has influence, access and a talent for making Richter feel expendable. Their tense working relationship runs through the books.

Manhunt is chronologically Richter's origin story. It begins when he is an unemployed former naval aviator and becomes bait in an operation meant to expose a traitor inside British intelligence. The case pulls him into a chase involving a Russian intelligence officer, assassins and evidence that points in an unexpected direction.

Overkill moves into full international-crisis mode, with nuclear weapons planted in major cities. Pandemic begins with a diver discovering a wreck and a sealed case off Crete. Foxbat returns to Cold War aviation history and a possible new conflict. Timebomb, Payback and Insurrection keep the focus on terrorist plots, political pressure and threats that have to be stopped under impossible time limits.

The later books widen the range further. Understrike sends Richter north after a body is found on Svalbard and evidence points to a secret Russian capability. In Bioweapon, suspicious deaths among weapons researchers lead toward a dangerous old project. Retribution is a shorter standalone case that puts him on the trail of killers after an assassination in London.

The series is direct and fast-moving. Barrington's service background shows in the attention paid to aircraft, weapons, fieldcraft and the frustrations of working between agencies. The technical material supports the chase rather than replacing it, and Richter remains the practical center of stories that can become very large very quickly.

You can begin with Manhunt for Richter's personal starting point, then move to Overkill. Readers who prefer publication order can start with Overkill and treat Manhunt as a later prequel. Either way, expect international espionage, hard choices and a hero who is usually most useful when nobody else wants to take responsibility.
