Author bio
Paul J Bennett was born in Maidstone, Kent, in 1961 and moved to Canada in 1967, trading English docks for the flat farmland of southwestern Ontario. His father had served in the Royal Navy, his mother worked in broadcasting, and stories were part of the air he grew up in.
As a teen, Bennett discovered a local hobby shop, first falling for military model kits, then for tabletop battle rules and military history. That mix of tiny tanks and big campaigns nudged him toward the Canadian Armed Forces, where he later served, and it never really left his writing.
The real turning point came with a slim boxed set of Dungeons & Dragons. Building dungeons led to building entire realms, and before long he was the one behind the screen, sketching maps, inventing pantheons and running long campaigns for groups who kept coming back to the table.
In his thirties he started designing his own role playing systems, beginning with campaigns set during the Peninsular War and then branching into science fiction, post apocalyptic wastelands, World War II battlefields and finally the fantasy world that would become Eiddenwerthe. His gaming tables piled up with binders full of characters, timelines and half finished ideas that felt too big for a single night’s play.
One of those campaigns, centered on the kingdom of Merceria and run like a television season with twelve episode arcs, became the seed for his first novel. When the game ended he realized he already knew the cast, the turning points and the ending, so he sat down to turn notes into prose. That work grew into Servant of the Crown, the book that opened the door to a full time writing life.
Rather than abandon the world once that story was told, he kept querying that same map. The long running Heir to the Crown sequence follows veterans, nobles and common soldiers as Merceria rises, stumbles and goes to war. The Frozen Flame shifts south and east to two hunted mages whose power could reshape kingdoms, while Power Ascending tracks temple knights and barons wrestling with faith, duty and invasion. In The Chronicles of Cyric, a curious temple knight solves murders and uncovers dark magic in compact mystery novellas, all set within the shared world of Eiddenwerthe.
Across all of these series he leans on the habits he built as a game master: clear geography, cause and effect and battles that feel earned. His combat scenes draw on years of reading military history and painting little soldiers, but he is just as interested in the quiet conversations around a campfire and the way found families form under pressure.
Today Bennett lives in Canada with his wife, Carol, and their three daughters. When he is not drafting the next novel set in Eiddenwerthe, he is often talking with readers, tweaking timelines or returning to the gaming table, exploring corners of the world that might someday turn into another book.
