Paul Fraser Collard writes historical adventures that feel lived-in, and that makes sense when you look at what first caught his imagination. As a boy, he was absorbed by military history, by old war films such as Waterloo and Zulu, and by the swagger and danger of series like Sharpe and Flashman. Long before he wrote novels, he was already drawn to soldiers, campaigns, and the gap between the official story of war and the rougher truth on the ground.

At school, he aimed seriously at an army career and won an Army Scholarship.

He did not stay on that path. Instead, he moved into finance, built a career in the City, and kept ordinary working life going alongside the historical interests that had been with him for years. That mix of discipline, routine, and restlessness shows up in his fiction, where ambition is never far from reinvention.

Writing came later.

Collard has spoken about using his commute to London as writing time, planning and drafting on trains, fitting the work into the edges of a busy life rather than waiting for perfect conditions. That practical start suits him. His books feel carefully built, but they also move fast, as if they were written by someone who learned to make every hour count.

His best-known character is Jack Lark, the East End soldier and impostor at the center of The Scarlet Thief. That first novel drops readers into the Crimean War and makes clear what Collard does well: sharp momentum, muddy battlefields, hard class lines, and a hero who is brave enough to lead men but never fully safe from exposure. Jack is not tidy, and that is a big part of the appeal.

He kept widening the map. The Maharajah's General and The Devil's Assassin carry Jack into India and Persia. The Lone Warrior throws him into the Indian Rebellion. The True Soldier and The Rebel Killer shift to the American Civil War, while Fugitive, Commander, and Diamond Hunter take him on to Abyssinia, the Nile, and the South African diamond fields. Across all of them, readers tend to come for the action and stay for the uneasy mix of nerve, fraud, loyalty, and survival.

The recurring themes are easy to spot once you know to look for them. Collard returns again and again to men on the make, rigid class systems, forgotten campaigns, and the personal cost of violence. He likes characters who can improvise under pressure, but he also keeps asking what that kind of life takes out of them.

He has also gone back to Jack's younger years in shorter pieces such as Rogue, Recruit, and Redcoat. Those stories fill in the East End and barracks years, and show that Jack's talent for getting into trouble arrived early.

Collard still works in finance and lives in Kent with his wife and three children. There is something fitting about that steady home base, because the books themselves range across continents while staying focused on one basic fascination: how history looks when you follow the hungry, sharp-edged man at the edge of the parade ground instead of the general on the horse.
