Author bio
Patricia H Rushford was born in Rugby, North Dakota, and built the kind of writing life that makes sense once you see all the pieces together. Nursing, counseling, parenting books, mystery series, quilting, painting, travel, and the Pacific Northwest all show up in her work.
She came to writing from real-world work.
In the early 1970s, Rushford went to nursing school and earned her degree in nursing. She later worked part time as a nurse for years, then finished graduate school and earned a master's degree in counseling. That background helps explain why even her fiction often pays attention to stress, grief, family strain, and the small practical details of ordinary life.
Writing did not arrive all at once. Rushford has said she started with journaling and poetry, then moved into articles and longer nonfiction. Writer's conferences helped point her toward books, and an encouraging editor, Fritz Ridenour, played a big part in getting her started. One of her early nonfiction books, Have You Hugged Your Teenager Today?, grew out of that push, and she went on to write other practical titles such as Caring for Your Sick Child, What Kids Need Most in a Mom, and books about money problems and caring for aging parents.
Then she turned to fiction.
Her teen mystery heroine Jennie McGrady became the center of Rushford's best-known work. Beginning with Too Many Secrets, the Jennie McGrady books follow a smart, determined young sleuth through missing persons cases, family secrets, danger, and first love. Readers responded to the clean suspense, the quick pacing, and Jennie's moral backbone. Silent Witness won a Silver Angel Award and was nominated for an Edgar Award, and the Jennie McGrady mysteries sold well over 500,000 copies.
Rushford did not stay in one lane for long. Adult readers got the Helen Bradley mysteries, the Angel Delaney books, and the McAllister Files, while younger readers got the Max & Me mysteries. Across those series, certain patterns keep returning, coastal Northwest settings, people under pressure, broken families, missing loved ones, and characters who have to decide what kind of person they will be when things go bad.
She also keeps one foot in the arts.
Rushford has described herself as an artist and quilter, and that side of her becomes especially visible in later books like Deadly Deception, The Quiltmaker's Daughter, and Watercolor Dreams. These stories bring painters, quilts, craft work, and creative communities into suspense plots, which gives them a warmer, more personal feel than a standard procedural.
She has long been active as a speaker, teacher, and workshop leader, and she has spoken about enjoying travel, hiking, and crafts like knitting, crocheting, and pottery. Sources also place her in the Pacific Northwest with her husband Ron, a good fit for a writer whose books so often return to Oregon, Washington, and the moods of the coast.
