Parson & Gold Books in Order

The Parson & Gold books are modern military thrillers built around two people who keep meeting danger from different angles. Michael Parson is an Air Force officer and aviator. Sophia Gold is an Army linguist and interpreter with deep knowledge of Afghanistan and its languages.

They are not a cozy investigative duo or a standard action pair. Their connection comes from shared danger, professional respect, and the fact that each sees things the other misses. Parson tends to push forward. Gold is more measured, more observant, and often better at reading the people around them.

That balance is the heart of the series.

It starts with The Mullah's Storm, where a shot-down transport plane strands them in the Hindu Kush with a Taliban prisoner and no easy rescue. Silent Enemy keeps the pressure on but changes the setup completely, trapping Parson, Gold, and a plane full of wounded passengers in the sky after they learn there is a bomb on board. The Renegades widens the lens, mixing disaster relief, insurgent violence, and the hard realities of Afghanistan late in the war.

After that, the series keeps moving. The Warriors begins with a crash at Manas Air Base in Kyrgyzstan and turns into an investigation involving smuggling, raw opium, and old Balkan hatreds. Sand and Fire pushes the action into North Africa, where chemical weapons and hostage threats raise the stakes again. In The Hunters, Parson and Gold fly relief missions into Somalia aboard an old DC-3 and run headfirst into pirates, armed factions, and al-Shabaab.

There is also the companion novella Phantom Fury, which steps away from the main pair to follow Marine staff sergeant A. E. Blount in Fallujah. It works as extra context for Sand and Fire, but it also shows what Young does well across the whole series: he treats combat as confusing, exhausting, and deeply human, not as clean movie spectacle.

What links these books is not one supervillain or one long puzzle. It is the work itself. Young is interested in transport crews, interpreters, advisers, relief flights, and the kind of missions that happen before, after, and around headline combat. The tone is tense and fast, but the books also make room for grief, loyalty, and hard moral choices. If you like military thrillers with strong settings, solid technical detail, and characters who feel worn in rather than larger than life, this is the lane.
