Series background & context

Paranormal I gathers Martin's early blend of ghost story and romantic suspense in The Silent Rose, The Dream, and The Secret. These books are modern in setting, but they carry the mood of a classic haunted tale, old crimes, restless spirits, and heroines who sense that something is badly wrong before anyone else believes them.

The first thing to expect is atmosphere. Inns, isolated houses, small towns, and emotionally loaded places matter as much as the central romance. Martin likes to put capable but vulnerable women into spaces where the past has not let go. The men around them may be skeptical, protective, or burdened with problems of their own, but eventually they have to face the same unsettling truth.

The danger is not only supernatural.

These are still suspense novels. Behind the visions, dreams, or eerie warnings, there is usually a human crime waiting to be uncovered. That balance is part of the appeal. The books want the chill of a ghost story, but they also want movement, investigation, and emotional payoff.

If you enjoy romantic suspense with a stronger paranormal thread than Martin's later thrillers, this trio is a solid place to start. It shows her testing out a darker, more haunted corner of her work.
