Troubles in Paradise

Series background & context

Paradise is one of Hilderbrand's most plot-driven series. It opens with Irene Steele, a woman from Iowa who thinks she understands her marriage, getting the kind of phone call that splits life into before and after. Her husband Russ dies in a helicopter crash near St. John, and when Irene and her sons head to the Caribbean, they learn he had a second life there.

That discovery gives the trilogy its main engine. Irene is grieving, angry, embarrassed, and deeply unsure of who Russ really was. Her sons are dealing with the same shock in their own ways. The island they land on is beautiful, warm, and full of color, but it is also crowded with unanswered questions, new loyalties, and people who knew pieces of Russ that his family never saw.

St. John is not just pretty background. The villas, beaches, bars, boats, heat, and small-island social circles shape everything that happens. Characters cannot hide for long, even in paradise. The series uses that contrast well. The view is dazzling, but the emotional weather is rough, and the more Irene learns, the more her future seems to shift under her feet.

It is sunnier than a thriller, and sharper than a simple vacation romance.

Across Winter in Paradise, What Happens in Paradise, and Troubles in Paradise, the stakes keep widening. What begins as a story about infidelity and grief grows into a larger puzzle involving Russ's death, possible foul play, family reinvention, and the difficult question of what to do after the truth finally arrives. There are love stories here, and plenty of island atmosphere, but the trilogy keeps pulling back to Irene's central problem: how do you rebuild a life when the one you trusted most was built on secrets?

Read these in order. Paradise is one long unraveling, and each book picks up the emotional and suspense threads from the one before it. If you want Elin Hilderbrand with more mystery, more forward motion, and a setting far from Nantucket but just as vivid, this is a strong place to go next.
