Series background & context

The Paradise Crime Thrillers shift Toby Neal's crime world into a faster, more dangerous gear. Instead of focusing mainly on police procedure, these books follow security specialist and hacker Sophie Ang as she moves through cybercrime, kidnapping, stalking, cults, theft, witness protection, volcanic disaster, and the kind of personal enemies that never stay neatly in the past.

Sophie is a different sort of lead from Lei Texeira. She is a hacker, an MMA fighter, a survivor of domestic violence, and a woman who often trusts computers, animals, and patterns more readily than people. Her yellow lab Ginger is part companion, part grounding force, and part early warning system. Right from Wired In, the series makes it clear that Sophie is at home in digital spaces, but real-world violence keeps dragging her out from behind the screen.

That mix is what gives the books their energy.

These are island thrillers, but not quiet ones. The cases move through encrypted networks, archaeological thefts, cult compounds, lava fields, private schools, endangered bird nesting grounds, and museum heists. Sophie often works with Jake Dunn, and the emotional life of the series deepens as her friendships, romances, and family responsibilities get more complicated. By the later books, she is not just solving cases. She is protecting children, surviving old enemies, and trying to build a life that danger keeps trying to break apart.

The thrillers are closely connected to Neal's wider Paradise crime world. Lei appears. Shared characters move in and out. That means readers who already know the mysteries will recognize familiar faces, but newcomers can still start here because the tone is distinct. The Sophie books are sharper, more kinetic, and more openly built around pursuit, confrontation, and high-stakes survival.

Neal also uses these books to stretch the geography of her fiction. Hawaii is still the anchor, but the threats often feel larger and more networked. A hacker can reach across islands. A cult can hide in jungle country. A criminal grudge can follow Sophie into her most private spaces. The paradise setting remains, but it is always under pressure.

If the Lei books are where Neal explores healing through police work, the Paradise Crime Thrillers are where she tests what happens when a survivor becomes the one hunting back. They are quick, tense, and character-driven, with enough continuing emotional fallout to reward reading in order.
