Series background & context

Page & Sommers follows Leo Page, a lonely intelligence man who has trained himself to leave no trace, and James Sommers, a country doctor still living with the aftershocks of war. Set in 1948 England, these books mix romance and mystery in a way that feels cozy on the surface and quietly bruised underneath.

Postwar peace does not mean anyone here is actually at peace.

In Hither, Page, a violent death pulls Leo into a village cover-up and drops him into James's orbit. James wants routine, patients, and a life small enough to feel safe. Leo is used to secrets, false names, and leaving before anything can matter. That contrast drives the first book, but so does the setting: hedgerows, village gossip, tea tables, and the sense that every tidy room may be hiding something uglier than it first appears.

The Missing Page moves the pair to Cornwall and opens the world up a little. An inheritance, a house full of uneasy guests, and a decades-old disappearance give the second book its mystery plot, but the emotional work is just as important. Leo and James are learning how to be a real couple, not just two men thrown together by danger.

The series works because Cat Sebastian never lets the puzzle crowd out the people. James's wartime trauma and Leo's habits of suspicion are not background decoration. They shape how the men speak, what they notice, and what it costs them to trust each other. Even the quieter scenes, a drive, a meal, a shared room, feel charged because both men know how easily safety can disappear.

These are mysteries, but they are gentle about it. The stakes can be high, yet the tone is more intimate than flashy. If you like village secrets, melancholy heroes, and a romance that grows through steadiness rather than grand gestures, Page & Sommers is one of Sebastian's most quietly absorbing series.
