Outlaw Trail Books in Order

The Outlaw Trail books are rugged standalone western romances set in the wide, dangerous country associated with the historic outlaw trail. Even though the novels are linked by setting and feel, each one brings in a new hero and heroine, which makes the series easy to sample in any order.

What ties the books together is the land. This is high, exposed country where cattle thieves, killers, drifting men, and desperate travelers can vanish fast. Bittner uses that harsh openness well. Her couples are often thrown together by ambush, revenge, wrongful accusation, or the simple fact that there is nobody else around to help.

Survival comes first.

Then love complicates it. In Ride the High Lonesome, a stranded woman saves a man left hanging. In Lawman in the High Lonesome, grief and revenge push a sheriff into dangerous territory. In Journey to High Lonesome, a wanted man and the woman who never stopped loving him are pulled back together by violence and accusation. Across all three, the emotional shape is similar: two wounded people, a merciless landscape, and feelings that become harder to deny the longer they ride together.

One extra pleasure here is the cameo structure. Bittner drops in characters from other books, so longtime readers get a wider sense of the same world without losing the focus of each romance. If you want fast-moving frontier stories without committing to one continuous family saga, this series is a good fit.
