Series background & context

Order of Prometheus is a shorter urban-fantasy sequence that starts with Smoke and Shadows and continues with Cloak and Daggers. It takes readers into a supernatural world where secret organizations, magical threats, and old rivalries can make a simple job turn dangerous fast.

The Order is never just background scenery.

As in several Katerina Martinez series, the organization at the center of the story offers protection and purpose, but it also has its own rules, loyalties, and blind spots. Characters must work inside that structure while deciding how much of themselves they can safely reveal.

The first book establishes the mysterious atmosphere suggested by its title: danger that is hard to see clearly, secrets moving through the city, and supernatural forces operating behind familiar streets and buildings. Cloak and Daggers continues the story with more pressure on the characters and their alliances.

The tone is brisk, dark urban fantasy. The books favor hidden magic, investigations, and people who have to choose between playing it safe and doing what they believe is right. Romance and attraction can be part of the complication, but the main draw is the feeling that every answer opens another door into trouble.

Because it is a two-book sequence, this is a manageable place to try Martinez's earlier work. The story is still connected to the author's larger interest in magical societies and dangerous supernatural politics, but readers can begin here without needing to know every other series first.

Start with Smoke and Shadows. It lays out the Order, the central mystery, and the stakes that carry into Cloak and Daggers.
