Series background & context
The On the Way to Christmas books are built around a shared holiday premise rather than one continuing cast. The central volume, On the Way to Christmas, brings together three standalone romantic novellas by Sheila Roberts, Melissa Ferguson, and Amy Clipston. Each story takes place in the busy stretch between Thanksgiving and Christmas, when a stalled plan can turn into an unexpected second chance.
Melissa Ferguson's contribution is Dashing Through the Snow. It follows Willow after her boyfriend of seven years ends their relationship just before a planned holiday getaway. Rather than give up the trip, she boards the Christmas Express alone for a two-week train journey. It is an immediate setup for travel trouble, new company, and the uncomfortable task of deciding what she wants when her old future disappears.
Her fellow travelers matter as much as the snow outside the windows. Willow's path crosses with conductor Oliver, as well as a lively group that includes an elf named Ian and an older adventurer named Clarence. The train gives the story a contained, festive setting, but the real tension comes from Willow's hurt, her shaken confidence, and the possibility that a trip she never wanted might help her see herself differently.
The other novellas use the same holiday season in different ways. In A Christmas Do-Over, Darby returns to the small town she once wanted to leave after a career setback. In A Perfectly Splendid Christmas, Kacey leaves city life to help her sister and run a bakery, where an old classmate complicates her plans. These are separate couples and separate problems, connected by winter, romance, and the chance to begin again.
That makes this an easy collection to dip into. You do not need to read the stories in a strict sequence, and Ferguson's Dashing Through the Snow works on its own. It also appears in her two-novella holiday collection Snowy Serendipity, alongside Pining for You.
Expect a light, sweet holiday-romance mood. The stakes are personal, not world-changing: work disappointments, family friction, broken expectations, and the risk of opening up to someone new. The snowy settings and seasonal events keep things cozy, while each heroine has to decide whether she can let an unexpected detour become something worth keeping.
