Omnitopia is Diane Duane working in a different register. Instead of young wizards or starships, this series moves into near-future science fiction, online worlds, and the strange place where entertainment, business, and artificial life start to overlap.

At the center is Omnitopia itself, a massive online gaming universe created by programmer and entrepreneur Dev Logan. For the people inside and around it, this is not a niche hobby. It is a global obsession, a workplace, a social system, and maybe something even more unpredictable.

That last part is what gives the series its tension. The big question is not only who wants control of Omnitopia, though there is plenty of corporate rivalry and sabotage in the setup. It is also what Omnitopia is becoming. As the technology grows more complex, the line between software and personhood starts to blur.

So the feel here is part techno-thriller, part workplace story, and part speculative question about creation and responsibility. Duane likes systems, and that comes through clearly. She is interested in how complicated worlds are built, who maintains them, who exploits them, and what happens when the thing you made starts to have needs of its own.
