Oil Knights Books in Order

The Oil Knights books, later connected to Johnston's Crocus Valley branding, are small-town contemporary romances with a slightly softer, more reflective feel than the King books. They are still tied to the same broad family-and-town network as the Barron stories, but the emotional center here is often memory, old hurt, and the question of what it means to come back to something you thought was over.

That theme is everywhere, right down to the titles. These books are full of exes, past marriages, best-friend's siblings, inherited obligations, and people whose lives did not go according to plan. A horse rescue needs help. A nanny job becomes more than temporary. An ex-husband turns into a secret again. A renovation job becomes an excuse to spend too much time with the wrong man. A fake marriage starts to feel uncomfortably real.

Memory is doing a lot of work here.

What keeps the series coherent is the family-and-town texture. Johnston likes connected standalones, and this series shows why. Background characters keep reappearing, the setting gets richer with every book, and the romances benefit from the fact that these people are not meeting in a void. They already have context, history, and opinions about each other.

The tone is warm, steamy, and sometimes a little wistful. The books still have plenty of banter and attraction, but they are also interested in how adults rebuild after disappointment. That gives the series a nice maturity without making it heavy.

If you like small-town romance where second chances are not simple, where family names matter, and where emotional history is half the plot, Oil Knights is one of Johnston's most satisfying contemporary runs.
