Series background & context

The Obama Biden Mysteries are comic crime novels that imagine Joe Biden and Barack Obama after they have left the White House. These are fictional versions of the public figures, recast as a bickering but loyal detective team. Joe tells the stories, bringing a hard-boiled inner monologue, old-school confidence, and plenty of frustration about being left out of Barack’s busy new life.

It starts with Hope Never Dies. Joe is at loose ends in Delaware when Finn Donnelly, an Amtrak conductor he knew, dies in what looks like a suspicious accident. Joe cannot accept the easy explanation, and the case draws Barack back into his orbit. Their search leads through motels, bars, police contacts, and the darker edges of a problem affecting their community.

The mystery matters, but the friendship is the engine.

Shaffer treats the pair like a comic detective duo. Joe is impulsive, chatty, and eager to get into trouble. Barack is more controlled and analytical, often playing the role of the person trying to keep the investigation from becoming a complete mess. The books have fun with public images, nicknames, Secret Service protocol, and political nostalgia, while keeping the central crimes serious enough to carry the plot.

In Hope Rides Again, Joe heads to Chicago for a visit with Barack before a public event. A stolen BlackBerry seems like a small problem at first, but a shooting turns the search into a larger investigation. Chicago is more than a backdrop here. Its streets, train yards, St. Patrick’s Day crowds, and political connections give the second book a faster, more urban feel.

These are mysteries with buddy-cop pacing rather than realistic political fiction. The tone is playful, occasionally absurd, and built for readers who enjoy wisecracks alongside clues. Still, each book gives Joe and Barack a reason to work through the awkwardness of a friendship changed by time, fame, and the end of a shared job.

Read the books in publication order. Hope Never Dies introduces the fictional partnership and establishes Joe’s voice, while Hope Rides Again works best once readers already know their dynamic. Expect political satire, amateur sleuthing, close calls, and a mystery partnership that is equal parts Sherlock and Watson, road-trip comedy, and old friends trying to find their footing again.
