Not Broken Books in Order

The Not Broken books follow one woman's path through fear, damage, and the long road back to something like trust. If Desert Rose Hook-Ups is the breezy side of Meka James, this is the heavy side. These books are tied together by Calida's life, so they work best when read in order, and the emotional payoff comes from seeing how much she endures, hides, and slowly begins to name.

The arc starts with Fiendish, which is not a soft entry point. Calida Alexander moves from Charlotte to Atlanta hoping for a reset and finds herself drawn to Seth Jokobi, a man who looks polished, charming, and safe until he very much isn't. James frames the novel as a dark, twisted take on Beauty and the Beast, but the story plays out in contemporary terms: manipulation, isolation, control, and the terrible gap between how someone appears in public and who they are in private. The tension comes from watching Calida try to understand the danger before it fully closes around her.

Then the series changes shape.

Not Broken: The Happily Ever After picks up after that damage and asks a different question. What does life look like after survival, when everyone around you wants proof that you're okay and you know you aren't? Calida has spent years building protective walls and burying the truth of what she lived through. Malcolm, a longtime friend and her first crush, wants a future with her, but love is only part of the story. Trust, shame, panic, memory, and the fear of needing someone again all matter just as much.

That is what gives this series its center. James does not treat recovery like a neat before-and-after line. The wounds in these books linger. Therapy, flashbacks, guarded choices, and halting conversations all have a place here, and the romance works because it has to meet Calida where she actually is, not where anyone wishes she were. The tone gets more hopeful as the story goes on, but it never pretends healing is simple.

The Lists, the later novella in this story world, shows a warmer and more playful side of Calida's relationship. Even there, the interest is not just steam for steam's sake. James keeps returning to honesty, desire, and the way secrets can sit inside a relationship long after the worst danger has passed.

Readers who want a light comfort read should probably start somewhere else in James's catalog. Readers who want a character-driven contemporary romance arc with dark material, hard-earned tenderness, and real attention to the aftermath of abuse will find more to hold on to here. Start with Fiendish, continue with Not Broken: The Happily Ever After, and let the series show you how survival and love can exist in the same story without ever becoming the same thing.
