The series begins with New England Rocks, where British teenager Rain Mackenzie is shipped off to a small American town after being expelled from boarding school. She arrives ready to hate everything about Northbrooke High, only to find that real life gets messy very quickly once feelings enter the picture.

Rain is a strong entry point because she sees the place as an outsider. What makes the setting work is that the stakes are small in one sense and enormous in another. Nobody is trying to save a kingdom, but fitting in, being laughed at, getting dumped, finding real friends, or surviving a brutal school day can feel just as serious when you are that age. Courtenay understands that. She treats teenage embarrassment, jealousy, grief, and longing as real forces, not as trivial practice problems before adult life begins.

As the series opens out, later stories follow other students in the same orbit, which gives the books a nice shared-world feel. Friends, siblings, classmates, and familiar school spaces carry over, so readers get the comfort of returning to the same town while still seeing new romantic angles. That structure works especially well for YA romance because every book can zero in on a fresh kind of tension, the newcomer, the bad boy, the impossible crush, the person who looks confident but is anything but.

The tone is lighter and more contemporary than Courtenay's historical novels, but some of her usual strengths are still there. She likes outsiders. She likes emotional momentum. She likes the moment when a character realizes the life they expected is no longer the life they are living. Northbrooke High just puts all of that into lockers, pep talks, school bands, and small-town American teen life.

If you want a friendly, emotionally direct YA series with romance at the center, this is a good one to try. Start with New England Rocks for the clearest introduction to the town, the school, and the kind of trouble waiting there.
