Series background & context

This is one of James Hunt's clearest continuing detective series, and it is built on the partnership between Kerry Martin and Jim North. They are not polished, easygoing cops. They come into the job carrying reputations, private damage, and more history than either would like. That is part of what makes the books work.

Jim North knows abduction from the inside. As a child, he was taken and survived, but survival did not close the wound. Kerry Martin has spent years trying to outrun the stain attached to her family name. Put them together, give them cases involving missing children and desperate parents, and Hunt has a reliable emotional core for the whole run.

The first book, Our Stolen Pieces, sets the tone right away with two girls missing after a slumber party. From there, the series keeps returning to the same hard terrain, children who vanish, families who are not telling the whole truth, and towns where somebody always thinks silence is the safest option. Books like Missing Pieces, Lost And Found, The Pieces that Remain, and Familiar Pieces keep pushing that pressure while also widening what we know about Jim and Kerry themselves.

These books move fast, but they are not only about the case of the week.

Hunt uses the investigations to dig at guilt, trauma, and obsession. Jim's past is never far away. Kerry's sense of what she has to prove never really settles down. The partnership matters because both characters understand, in different ways, what it feels like to work while people are already judging you.

The result is a darker, more emotionally loaded detective series than a standard procedural. If you like child-abduction mysteries with recurring leads, plenty of urgency, and a partnership that carries real weight from book to book, North and Martin is one of Hunt's strongest entry points.
