Author bio

Nick Russell spent years telling other people's stories before he fully trusted himself to tell his own. He published daily and weekly newspapers in Washington, Oregon, and Arizona, work that gave him a reporter's eye for small-town politics, local grudges, and the odd details that make a place feel real.

He came to fiction the long way around.

Later, he and his wife Terry became full-time RVers and spent almost 18 years roaming America's back roads. Along the way they produced the Gypsy Journal RV travel newspaper and led seminars at rallies around the country. That long stretch on the road seems to have fed a lot of what readers now like about his books, the sense that he knows how regular people talk, how towns work, and how trouble can hide behind ordinary front doors.

Russell began writing Big Lake in 1998, but he did not rush it into print. At the time he was known mainly for nonfiction, and by his own account he was not sure he could make the jump to novels. Encouragement from Terry and close friends mattered. When he finally self-published Big Lake in 2011, the book found a big audience and kicked off the long-running series that still anchors his fiction.

That first success also set the pattern for a lot of his work.

In the Big Lake books, readers follow Sheriff Jim Weber through crimes that tear at the surface of a mountain town in Arizona's White Mountains. Books like Big Lake, Big Lake Lynching, and Big Lake Abduction mix police work with gossip, family tensions, and the slow burn of local resentment. They are mysteries, but they are also books about communities, the kind of places where everybody knows a name and almost nobody knows the full story.

He has also shown that he likes changing gears. Dog's Run and Return to Dog's Run lean darker and more historical, looking at postwar Ohio and the hard line between respectability and desperation. The John Lee Quarrels novels, beginning with Stillborn Armadillos and The Gecko in the Corner, move to rural north Florida and add more rough humor, family chaos, and back-road grit. Then Tinder Street opened another lane entirely, a multigenerational historical saga about working people, war, survival, and the building of a neighborhood over time.

He never really left nonfiction behind, either. Books like Meandering Down the Highway, The Frugal RVer, Overlooked Florida, and Overlooked Arizona show the same interests that run through his fiction, travel, overlooked places, and the stories sitting just outside the busiest routes. Even when he is writing practical nonfiction, he sounds like someone who enjoys the human side of the journey.

Place matters in his books.

Whether he is writing about the Arizona high country, a Florida county road, or a Midwestern street a family grows old on, Russell tends to stay close to ordinary lives. His characters are cops, workers, drunks, veterans, mothers, town gossips, troublemakers, and people trying to do one decent thing before the day gets worse. Readers who like him usually mention the same thing, that his stories feel lived in.

These days, Russell and Terry are based in Arizona's White Mountains, the setting closest to his best-known series. He still writes with the steady pace of someone who spent a long time working deadlines, and he still seems most interested in what goes on just off the main highway. That turns out to be a good place to find stories.
