Author bio
Nick Mamatas was born on February 20, 1972, on Long Island, New York. He grew up in New York in a Greek American family, and that mix of city life, politics, immigrant memory, and outsider culture still shows up all through his fiction.
Before the novels, he made a living as a freelance writer. He wrote journalism and essays for outlets such as the Village Voice and Silicon Alley Reporter, and for a time supported himself by ghostwriting student papers, an experience he later turned into the widely discussed essay The Term Paper Artist.
Writing was not a neat career plan. It was work, survival, and a way to keep making sentences until fiction took over.
Mamatas studied at Stony Brook University and New School University, then later earned an MFA in professional and creative writing from Western Connecticut State University, after he had already published books, stories, and articles. That backwards order feels right for him. He has always seemed more interested in doing the work than in looking tidy on paper.
His early books made it clear that he was not going to stay in one lane. Move Under Ground throws Jack Kerouac and the Beats into a Cthulhu apocalypse. Under My Roof turns Long Island suburbia into a nuclear microstate satire. Bullettime follows a bullied New Jersey teenager through splintered versions of his own life, each one getting darker and stranger.
Later novels keep that restless energy. I am Providence is part murder mystery, part fandom satire, part argument about Lovecraft and the people who still gather around him. Sabbath drops an eleventh-century warrior into modern Manhattan and sends him after the Seven Deadly Sins. The Second Shooter starts with conspiracy talk around mass shootings and spirals into surveillance, paranoia, and something much weirder.
He has also done a lot of editorial work. Mamatas edited Viz Media's Haikasoru line of Japanese science fiction in translation, and he has co-edited anthologies such as Haunted Legends, which won a Bram Stoker Award. His fiction and editorial work have also received nominations for the Hugo, World Fantasy, Shirley Jackson, and Bram Stoker awards.
Short fiction matters just as much in his career. Stories from across his catalog have appeared in Best American Mystery Stories, Year's Best Science Fiction and Fantasy, Tor.com, and many other venues. Collections such as You Might Sleep, The Nickronomicon, and The People's Republic of Everything show how comfortably he moves between horror, satire, crime, and stranger things that do not fit neatly on a shelf.
These days he lives in the California Bay Area. The setting changed, but the work still feels wired to New York argument, subculture, and the sense that ordinary life is only a step away from absurdity or apocalypse.
That is a big part of why readers come back. A Nick Mamatas book can be funny, nasty, political, creepy, and oddly tender in the space of a few pages, and he usually makes that mix look easier than it is.
