Nephilim demon‑hunter Lily Marks spends her nights killing monsters and her days dodging suspicion inside the Sanctuary. When a traitor emerges and evidence points to her forbidden connection with fallen angel Julian, she must team up with the one being she can’t afford to want.
Series background & context
Nephilim Rising is a gritty, adult urban‑fantasy line built around one full‑length novel: Unchained. It trades high‑school lockers and college dorms for shadowed alleys, secret sanctuaries, and an underground war between angels, demons, and the human‑angel hybrids caught in the middle.
Lily Marks is a Nephilim, descended from the union of angels and humans. Her job is straightforward on paper and brutal in practice: hunt and kill the demons who prey on mortals, then drag herself back to the Sanctuary to do it again the next night. She’s good at what she does, which has earned her a certain amount of grudging respect, but also a mountain of scars and very little room for a normal life.
Julian, the man who keeps crossing her path, is everything she’s supposed to destroy. He’s a fallen angel with his own agenda, more amused than offended by Lily’s attempts to push him away. They are mortal enemies by definition, and the Sanctuary elders would exile or execute her if they knew how often she lets him walk away.
When evidence surfaces that someone inside the Sanctuary is betraying their own, Lily finds herself under suspicion. Her connection to Julian makes it all too easy for others to believe the worst. To clear her name and stop a threat that could get a lot of people killed, she has to do the one thing she swore she wouldn’t: work with the fallen angel who tempts her in every possible way.
The book blends steamy romance with demon fights, political infighting, and questions about faith and corruption. Lily’s world is not divided neatly into good and evil; angels can be ruthless, and some demons are capable of unsettling kindness. Her struggle is less about which side she serves and more about who deserves her loyalty and trust.
While Unchained stands alone, it shares DNA with Armentrout’s other paranormal series. Readers who enjoy the gargoyle Wardens of Dark Elements or the demon‑hunting Order in Wicked will feel at home in its mix of danger, banter, and morally messy supernatural politics. Nephilim Rising offers a darker, more overtly adult spin on the theme of a woman who’s been trained to be a weapon learning to ask what she wants for herself.
