Misunderstood

by RL Mathewson

2020

Sebastian Bradford knows his life is spinning off course, even if he will not admit it. Mikey Campbell, his loyal best friend, is determined to get through to him before one bad decision changes everything.

Series background & context

The Neighbor From Hell YA series takes the chaos, loyalty, and family pressure of the adult Bradford books and shifts the focus to the next generation. These stories are younger in feel and more rooted in school, friendship, first love, and the misery of being a teenager while surrounded by very intense adults who think they know best.

Misunderstood centers on Sebastian Bradford and Mikey Campbell, and that pairing tells you a lot about the series as a whole. The emotional scale is different from the adult romances, but the setup still feels very Mathewson. Sebastian is carrying more than he lets on. Mikey knows him well enough to see the cracks. Around them is the usual orbit of family members, opinions, interference, and the kind of history that makes every small mistake feel bigger.

It still has Bradford energy.

The appeal here is watching characters who are young enough to still be figuring themselves out but old enough for feelings to land hard. Best-friend tension, embarrassing parents, school trouble, awkward honesty, and that horrible mix of confidence and panic that comes with first love all feed the plot. The series treats teenage emotions seriously without making the books feel gloomy or overblown.

Because these stories grow out of the adult Neighbor From Hell world, family background matters more than setting. You are not just reading about one couple in isolation. You are seeing how kids raised around all that Bradford stubbornness, protectiveness, and chaos handle their own turning points. That gives the series an extra layer. The adults are not just obstacles or scenery. Their histories echo through the younger characters' choices.

If you already like the main series, this is an easy side road because it keeps the familiar voice while lowering the age of the leads. If you are starting here, expect first love with a lot of humor, a lot of heart, and families that never stay out of anything for long. These books are about growing up, messing up, and realizing that being understood by one person can change the whole shape of your world.
