Navajo Rez Books in Order

The Navajo Rez books, also published as the Trading Post novels, are built around a simple but rich idea. A trading post just off the reservation becomes the center of a whole web of lives, secrets, and second chances. People come there to work, shop, argue, hide, and start over.

At the center is Josephine Buck, a young Navajo woman who wants to become a hataalii, a healer, while also trying to make her way in the everyday world. She is tied to The Outpost through work, loyalty, and the kind of community obligation that is never as simple as punching a clock. The owner, Tom Stuart, means a great deal to her, and his death sets the first book in motion.

This is a series where a place matters as much as a plot.

The trading post is not just scenery. It is the crossroads where personal grief, business trouble, family history, and criminal danger all meet. In A Time of Change, that means murder, inheritance, and a painful clash between Jo and Tom's son, Ben. In Looking Through Darkness, the focus widens to Jo's circle, especially Leigh Ann Vance, whose husband's death leaves behind questions, accusations, and emotional wreckage that do not stay buried for long.

The tone here is warmer and more community-minded than in the harder police books, but the danger is real. These novels care about healing, trust, and what happens after a loss, yet they still give readers murder, suspicion, financial secrets, and the sense that somebody is always holding back one important truth.

If you like stories where the romance grows out of shared work and mutual respect, this series does that well. If you like small-community suspense, it does that too. The books keep one foot in everyday life and the other in genuine peril, which is a good description of a lot of the Thurlos' best work.
