Author bio
Natasha Deen was born in Canada, spent the first part of her childhood in Guyana, and later moved with her family to Calgary, Alberta. Her family left Guyana during a period of political and racial violence, and that sense of living between places has stayed close to her work ever since.
As a kid, she did not dream of becoming a writer. She wanted to be a superhero.
That detail actually helps explain a lot about her books. Deen has often spoken about feeling out of place as a mixed-race kid in Canada, and about how books and comics gave her a way to see difference as power instead of weakness. The oddballs, outsiders, and kids who do not quite fit in were often the ones who made it through. That idea, that being different can also mean being strong, shows up again and again in her fiction.
Before publishing novels, she studied psychology at the University of Alberta. Then came the slow part. She wrote, got rejected, kept writing, and learned how to hold on through the years when other people seemed to be moving faster. That persistence matters to her story. By her own account, breaking into publishing was not quick or glamorous. It was work.
And she kept at it.
Her books now range across mystery, fantasy, horror, historical fiction, and contemporary YA, but they tend to share the same pulse. True Grime turns a teen fairy cop into the center of a fast, funny fantasy about protecting humans from magical extremists. The Guardian trilogy shifts into paranormal mystery, following Maggie Johnson as she helps the dead cross over while trying to solve murders in a small Alberta town.
She can change gears without losing her center. In In the Key of Nira Ghani, Deen writes about a Guyanese teen trying to balance family expectations, grief, class pressure, and a fierce love of music. In The Signs and Wonders of Tuna Rashad, she mixes romance, mourning, inherited belief, and sharp comic timing. For younger readers, books like Lark Holds the Key and The Ghost Tree keep the pace quick and the tone inviting, while still making room for kids who feel a little out of step with the world around them.
That outsider energy is her home turf.
She returns often to family, belonging, folklore, faith, and the private decisions that shape a life. Even her historical stories, including Maria and the Plague and Millie and the Great Drought, stay close to a young person's point of view. Big events matter in those books, but so do fear, hunger, embarrassment, loyalty, and hope. She writes suspense, but she also writes about what it costs to keep going.
Deen now lives in Edmonton, Alberta, with her husband and a lively mix of pets. She teaches children's writing, visits schools and libraries, and speaks often about story, identity, and the hero's journey. Her novel In the Key of Nira Ghani won the Amy Mathers Teen Book Award, and The Signs and Wonders of Tuna Rashad was named among a major Canadian newspaper's top books of 2022. Still, the strongest thread in her work is simpler than any award list. She writes for readers who want adventure, mystery, and a little humour, but also want to feel seen.
