Jim Fusilli's Narrows Gate books are crime novels, but they are also neighborhood epics. Set in a waterfront town across the Hudson that is loosely based on Hoboken, they follow friends, families, singers, grocers, and gangsters through the years around World War II and into the uneasy postwar era. The series is interested in mob power, of course, but just as much in how a place works: who owes whom, who wants out, who gets watched, and who gets used.

The key figures are Sal Benno and Leo Bell, lifelong friends who grow up in the same streets yet see different futures. Sal is the local kid who does not take to school but proves useful to the Mafia, which pulls him closer to danger and influence. Leo is smarter, more outward-looking, and more aware that the town can trap a person as easily as it can protect him. Moving around them is Billy "Bebe" Marsala, a handsome crooner whose rise in entertainment makes him both a hometown legend and a pawn in larger games.

In Narrows Gate, the neighborhood still feels small enough for everybody to know the stories, but the forces pressing on it are already much bigger than one block or one family. The Mayor of Polk Street carries those lives into a later stage. Sal survives but never quite relaxes. Leo has a shot at a different future working at CBS, though the Red Scare turns even success into something fragile. Meanwhile, an exiled Mafia boss moves across Sicily and other power centers, and the pressure from that wider world reaches right back into Narrows Gate. The canvas gets broader, stretching toward places like Hollywood, Las Vegas, and Greece, yet the heart of the story remains friendship and community.

These books are not just about hits, betrayals, and underworld hierarchy. They care about immigrant families, ethnic identity, ambition, class, and the cost of belonging to a place that can feed you and trap you at the same time. There is plenty of violence, but there is also work, music, romance, politics, and the long shadow of being born on the wrong street or the right one.

So if you come to Narrows Gate looking for a mob saga, you will get one. But you also get a thickly lived-in town, a pair of complicated friends, and a series that treats history not as backdrop but as the pressure that shapes every private choice.
