Author bio

Nancy Herriman writes historical fiction that puts ordinary people in difficult places, then lets them work through the danger one clue, choice, or hard conversation at a time. Her books range from faith-centered historical romance to mysteries set in nineteenth-century San Francisco and Tudor England.

Ohio sits at both ends of her story. It is her home state, and she later returned there after spending two decades in Arizona. She studied chemical engineering at the University of Cincinnati, where she also took courses in history and archaeology, interests that would prove useful when she began building fictional worlds from the past.

Before writing became her full-time focus, Herriman worked in the tech industry as an engineer. She has also fronted a bar band and acted on stage, which gives her biography a little more variety than the usual author bio.

Writing became the work that stuck.

Her first published novel, The Irish Healer, travels to 1830s London with Rachel Dunne, an Irish healer running from a painful accusation. The book brings medicine, faith, class prejudice, grief, and a slow-building romance into the same troubled household. Josiah's Treasure moves to 1882 San Francisco, where Sarah Whittier hopes to create an art studio for immigrant women, only to have an inheritance dispute and rumors of hidden gold put her plans at risk.

Herriman returned to San Francisco for No Comfort for the Lost, the opening book in her Mystery of Old San Francisco series. The novels follow British-born nurse Celia Davies and detective Nicholas Greaves through a city shaped by sharp divides of wealth, race, and power. Celia runs a free clinic for women, and the cases repeatedly pull her and Nick into crimes that touch people the city would rather overlook.

Then she went farther back in time. In the Bess Ellyott mysteries, beginning with Searcher of the Dead, a widowed herbalist tries to make a life in Elizabethan Wiltshire after her husband's murder. Bess's healing knowledge, curiosity, and refusal to accept an easy answer put her alongside local constable Kit Harwoode as they face suspicious deaths, gossip, religious tension, and fear of witchcraft.

Her stories often feature women working in forms of medicine or care, and they pay attention to the limits those women face. The mysteries have murder and danger, but they also make room for family ties, communities under strain, and relationships that have to earn trust.

Herriman has won the Daphne du Maurier Award. When she is not writing, she enjoys singing with choral groups, talking about writing with friends, and eating dark chocolate. She lives in Ohio with her family.
