But there is also a real setting underneath them, with politics, scarcity, and an ongoing mystery about how humans and naga are meant to share the same world.

Tone matters here too. These books are hot, obsessive, and sometimes dark, but they are not one-note. Some heroes are almost feral in their fixation. Others are gentler, lonelier, or more wary. The heroines vary too, which helps the series avoid feeling like the same courtship repeated over and over.
