Series background & context

The Mystic Lake Mystery books bring Lena Diaz back to small-town suspense, but with a slightly different feel from her swamp or SWAT series. These stories are built around a lake town where missing people, buried secrets, and uneasy local ties keep turning ordinary places into crime scenes. The mood is still tense, but there is a little more mystery texture in the mix.

Each book follows a new couple, yet the town is the real through-line. Water matters here. So do boats, shorelines, and the sort of quiet corners where something can stay hidden longer than it should. Diaz uses that well. The surface calm of Mystic Lake keeps clashing with the danger underneath.

Small towns remember everything, except the things they are trying hardest to hide.

In Hunting the Crossbow Killer, FBI agent Grace Malone investigates a serial murder case while suspecting Aidan O'Brien may know far more than he admits. Vanished in the Mist sends PI Shanna Hudson and boater Kaden Rafferty looking for a missing teen, only to uncover a second mystery no one even reported. The Lawman's Deadly Bargain shifts to former police chief Beau Dawson and Sierra Covington, whose search for her brother's killer is complicated by her dangerous family ties.

What makes the series work is the balance between closeness and suspicion. These are not globe-spanning thrillers. They are town-level stories where the danger feels near at hand and very personal. The protagonists are constantly trying to decide whether the person standing next to them is a help, a complication, or part of the problem.

If you want a newer Lena Diaz series with a strong setting, clean mystery hooks, and romance that grows out of uneasy partnerships, Mystic Lake Mystery is an easy series to sink into.
