If you are coming from Crater's Power Places books, this series will feel leaner, grittier, and much more hard-edged. There is still a metaphysical layer beneath the action, but the mood is closer to a conspiracy thriller than a quest fantasy. Expect close calls, covert maneuvering, and a heroine who survives by staying sharper than everyone around her. If that mix of spiritual unease, political corruption, and relentless pressure sounds appealing, this is the place to start.
