The Unquiet Bones

by Loreth Anne White

2024

Human bones found beneath an old chapel may belong to a teenage girl who vanished nearly fifty years earlier. Detective Jane Munro soon realizes the discovery could destroy the polished lives of the friends who were there that night.

Series background & context

Munro & Quinn is Loreth Anne White's crime series following detective Jane Munro and forensic anthropologist Dr. Ella Quinn. Their work brings long-hidden deaths into the present, where surviving friends and relatives may have built entire lives around an incomplete account of what happened. The mysteries combine police investigation with the study of human remains, asking how physical evidence can challenge stories repeated for decades.

The Unquiet Bones begins with bones discovered beneath an old chapel in the woods. They may belong to Annalise Jansen, a teenager whose disappearance has remained unresolved for almost fifty years. Jane hopes the discovery can give the girl's family answers. For a group of Annalise's former friends, however, it threatens a secret they believed had stayed buried. The opening places the needs of people seeking closure beside the fears of people determined to avoid it.

The past hasn't stopped shaping the present.

The friends, once known as the Shoreview Six, are now established and respected members of their communities. That position gives them more to protect than a distant memory. A pledge made in their youth begins to put pressure on their current relationships as the investigation proceeds. Jane and Ella have to distinguish what the evidence reveals from what people are prepared to admit, while the group faces the possibility that maintaining a shared account may no longer serve every member equally.

Jane's pregnancy and the disappearance of her fiancé add a personal dimension to her work. She understands the strain of living without a clear answer about someone who has vanished. That experience doesn't tell her how to solve another family's case, but it connects the professional search for facts with the emotional need for certainty. Her own life continues alongside the investigations, giving the series a thread beyond the identity of the person responsible for any single death.

The connected stories continue with Where Bones Sleep and The Bone Takers. The former opens with a woman's remains sealed in a barrel inside an abandoned well, drawing Jane toward a disappearance from 1945. The latter brings a new discovery into contact with questions surrounding her missing fiancé. These setups extend the series' interest in connections between old and recent cases, while keeping Jane's responsibilities and unresolved grief close to the investigations she undertakes.

Begin with The Unquiet Bones to meet Jane and Ella through the chapel discovery, then continue with Where Bones Sleep and The Bone Takers. The tone is a cold-case mystery with psychological suspense, attentive to the costs of keeping secrets and waiting for answers. The central cases concern people whose lives have already been shaped by disappearance or death. Investigating the remains means more than identifying the past: it can disturb the arrangements by which those still living have learned to carry on.
