Mountain Home Books in Order

The Mountain Home books pick up where the Smoky Mountain novels leave off, not by continuing one plot, but by continuing the same love of mountain communities, local businesses, and people forced into a reset. This series is built as stand-alone fiction. Each book introduces a new lead, a new town or corner of the region, and a new life problem that knocks somebody off the path they thought they were on.

The series begins with Happy Valley, where Juliette Hollander returns to her grandparents' Tennessee farm after her grandfather's heart attack and finds old connections waiting for her there. In Down Sizing, Mary Pat Latham is shoved into starting over after her marriage falls apart. Eight At The Lake moves to Dandridge, where storm chaser Samantha King is forced to slow down and recover. The pattern keeps changing shape, but the core question stays similar: when life strips away the plan, what comes next?

Later books widen the emotional and geographic reach. Seeking Ayita brings Annalise Silva from Hawaii to Cherokee with her mother's ashes and questions about her own roots. Shop on the Corner follows Laura O'Dell after family loss and a business crisis push her toward drastic change. The Red Mill Bookstore and Wildflower Haven keep the focus on work, family land, and unexpected belonging, through a closing bookstore, a mountain mill, and a long-held nursery in Cosby.

What makes these books feel like a series, when the casts change so much, is Stepp's way of building place. Happy Valley, the Glades near Gatlinburg, Dandridge, Cherokee, Waynesville, Townsend, and Cosby all feel like their own small worlds. Shops, farms, bookstores, garden centers, repair stores, trails, rivers, churches, and front porches all matter. The setting shapes daily life rather than just decorating it.

The tone is warm and readable, with romance woven through, but these are also books about adulthood, disappointment, and rerouting. Some leads are young. Some are midlife. Some are grieving, divorced, overworked, or simply worn out by circumstance. There is often a bit of mystery, local history, or family complication moving underneath the main relationship, which keeps the stories from feeling too narrow.

If you like mountain fiction that stays grounded in ordinary lives, this series is easy to settle into. You can read the books in any order, but together they create a larger portrait of people finding home, not always where they expected it, but often where they most needed it.
