Moris Klaw is Rohmer's strangest detective, and probably his most distinctive after Fu Manchu. He is not a conventional policeman or private investigator. He is an eccentric, occult-leaning problem-solver whose methods seem almost impossible until you get used to his world. The title The Dream Detective tells you most of what you need to know.

Klaw often approaches a case by sleeping at or near the scene and letting impressions rise to the surface. That sounds supernatural, and Rohmer absolutely wants it to sound supernatural. At the same time, Klaw is not simply a magician waving his hands. He studies objects, moods, gestures, rooms, and hidden motives. His method sits in a strange place between intuition, psychology, and psychic suggestion, which is why the stories feel so unlike standard mystery fiction.

He is not alone. His daughter Isis is a key presence in the stories, and the books often use a journalist narrator and skeptical police contacts to give the reader a steadier point of view. That balance works well. Klaw can remain odd and elusive because other people are standing nearby, trying to translate what he is doing into ordinary language.

The cases themselves are perfect Rohmer material.

Museums, relics, ancient symbols, locked rooms, strange deaths, and events that look plainly cursed all pass through Klaw's orbit. Some stories lean toward rational explanation, some toward the uncanny, and many live in the middle ground for as long as possible. Rohmer was very good at that middle ground. He knew that uncertainty is often more enjoyable than a quick answer.

Books such as The Dream Detective, The Methods of Moris Klaw, and later collections built from the Klaw stories are best read as a tour through Rohmer's favorite eerie ingredients. They are less about a long-running plot than about the pleasure of one unsettling case after another. If you like detective fiction that drifts toward dreams, relics, and half-seen forces, this is one of the richest corners of Rohmer's work.
