Series background & context

The Moonlight Trilogy is a set of three connected romances that return to Jude Deveraux’s Virginia world, with Edilean as the emotional home base. The books, Moonlight in the Morning, Stranger in the Moonlight, and Moonlight Masquerade, each focus on a different central couple. Read together, they feel like three spotlights sweeping over the same community, showing you different corners of town life and different kinds of love stories.

Edilean is a small-town setting that does a lot of work. People have long histories with each other, favors are remembered, and someone always knows who your grandmother dated. That closeness can be comforting, but it can also be suffocating, which is perfect romance pressure for characters who are trying to start over. Expect comfort-read warmth, plenty of neighborly interference, and a little twistiness.

These novels lean into crossroads moments. Heroines are usually rebuilding something, a career, a sense of self, a life plan that fell apart, and the romance grows out of that rebuilding rather than interrupting it. The men they fall for may be newcomers, old friends, or strangers who arrive with questions attached, but the relationship always has to earn its trust. Friendship and chosen family sit right alongside the romance.

The “moonlight” in the title fits the vibe. A lot happens after dark, conversations that people have been avoiding, truths that finally get said out loud, and choices made when there is no audience. Moonlight Masquerade also plays with the idea of hidden identity, the freedom that comes from being unseen, and the risk of being truly known.

There is often a mystery thread running alongside the romance, but it stays personal. Instead of a procedural case, you get family history, missing context, half-told stories, and the lingering sense that the past in Edilean never stays quiet for long. Recurring friends and neighbors link the books, so each love story feels connected to a bigger community.

Romance first, questions second, answers last.

Because the trilogy is designed as a set, it is best read in order. Starting with Moonlight in the Morning gives you the clearest introduction to the cast and the town’s rhythm, and the later books build on those relationships. This page lists the trilogy in order, gives the series background, and helps you decide if Moonlight is the right entry point for your mood. If you like small towns with secrets, start here.
