Maisie is annoyed that her only summer adventure is babysitting siblings while her parents care for Great Aunt Hazel, until cryptic texts and a blank book reveal Hazel was a time traveling “moonleaper” and has chosen Maisie to continue her mission.
Series background & context
Moonleapers is a newer duology built around secret time travelers who nudge history at key moments. In the first book, Moonleapers, sixth grader Maisie finally gets a hand me down phone, only to have her summer plans upended when her family moves to help care for her ailing great aunt Hazel. Strange texts and a blank book titled Guide for Moonleapers pull Maisie into a puzzle she did not ask for. (kirkusreviews.com)
As she solves riddles and follows clues, Maisie learns that Hazel once belonged to a small group of “moonleapers” who slipped through time to stop disasters and that Hazel now expects her to take up the work. Time jumps connect Maisie to Hazel’s childhood during the Great Depression and World War II, and force her to balance big, world scale stakes with the very personal fear of losing someone she loves.
The series mixes mystery, family drama, and the emotional weight of illness and memory loss with the fun of decoding messages that arrive through a seemingly ordinary phone. It is a good fit for readers who like the moral questions in The Missing but want a more intimate, character focused story.
On this page you will find the Moonleapers books in order, plus background on how the duology came out of a real family story Haddix has talked about, and how it fits alongside her other time bending work.
