Series background & context

The books often grouped as the Montana Trilogy follow the McCaskill family and their neighbors through roughly a century in Ivan Doig’s fictional Two Medicine country. From first‑generation Scottish immigrants breaking sod in the 1880s to a Winnebago crisscrossing the state during the 1989 centennial, the trilogy tracks how one patch of Montana weathers boom times, busts, and private heartbreak.

Chronologically the story begins with Dancing at the Rascal Fair. In 1889 childhood friends Angus McCaskill and Rob Barclay leave industrial Scotland to try sheep ranching in a valley they nickname Scottish Heaven. Doig follows them through blizzards, drought, market crashes, and World War I, as well as an entwined love story involving Angus, schoolteacher Anna Ramsay, and Rob’s sister Adair. It’s a novel about ambition and stubbornness as much as about homesteading.

English Creek jumps to the summer of 1939, when Angus’s son Varick is a forest ranger and fourteen‑year‑old Jick McCaskill is learning the ropes on the Double W ranch. The season’s sheep counts, haying crews, and Fourth‑of‑July rodeo are overshadowed by brother Alec’s rebellion and a catastrophic forest fire, pushing Jick to decide what kind of life he wants in a world trembling on the edge of war.

In Ride With Me, Mariah Montana, Jick is a widowed sixty‑five‑year‑old drafted as Winnebago chauffeur for his photographer daughter, Mariah, and her reporter ex‑husband, Riley, as they cover Montana’s centennial. Their looping road trip skirts celebrations, rundown ranches, reservations, and boom‑and‑bust towns, forcing all three to rethink what counts as the “real” Montana and what pieces of family history they still carry.

Taken together, the trilogy offers a layered portrait of ranch and small‑town life where big events—statehood, influenza, the Depression, late‑century tourism—show up as forces tugging at individual families. Doig lingers on the work itself, from shearing contests to haying crews, and lets loyalties, grudges, and romances accumulate over time. You can read the books in publication order, starting with English Creek, or begin with Dancing at the Rascal Fair if you prefer strict chronology; either way, the reward is watching one stubborn clan and one Montana valley change across a hundred years.
