Monkey Prince Books in Order

Monkey Prince takes one of Gene Luen Yang's favorite source texts, Journey to the West, and drops its energy straight into the DC Universe. The lead is Marcus Sun, a kid who keeps moving because his adoptive parents work as henchpeople. That alone tells you the tone. This series likes superhero action, but it also likes jokes, chaos, and the strange corners of family life.

Marcus is not set up as a polished hero.

He is a new kid, confused about where he belongs, and only gradually learns that he has a deep connection to the Monkey King. Once that door opens, the series starts mixing school problems, mythic powers, and DC cameos at a fast clip. Marcus can transform, fight, and bounce from one impossible situation to another, but he is still a teenager trying to understand who he is and what his parents have really been keeping from him.

A lot of the fun comes from the supporting cast. Shifu Pigsy acts as mentor, comic relief, and occasional headache all at once. Batman, Robin, Aquaman, and other DC figures appear, but they do not swallow the book. They mostly make Marcus's world feel bigger, stranger, and harder to navigate. Yang uses those meetings to show how out of place Monkey Prince can feel, even when he has incredible power.

The series also carries a real emotional thread under the mischief. Marcus is dealing with adoption, secrecy, loyalty, and the problem of inherited stories. Is he supposed to follow the path laid out for him by myth and cosmic history, or can he make something new. That question keeps the book from turning into a simple gag machine.

The overall tone is lively, colorful, and kid friendly without feeling flat. There are demons, prophecies, magical weapons, and big fights, but there is also a lot of heart in the way Marcus keeps trying to piece together his family and his place in the world. If you like superhero books that are funny, myth-heavy, and a little unruly, Monkey Prince is a very welcoming place to start.
