The Monika Ritter books take the wider Ritter saga into full on espionage territory. If The Lion's Den is about a family caught inside Hitler's rise, and Maureen Ritter is about resistance on the ground in France, this series follows the war's covert side: spies, pilots, couriers, double agents, prison camps, and missions that can go wrong in a dozen different ways. It starts in 1942 and builds fast from there.

Monika first enters the larger story as the woman Michael Ritter falls in love with, but once her own series begins she becomes the clear center. In The German Girl, she is in New York with Michael, haunted by what has happened in Germany and frustrated by distance. When Michael joins the Army Air Force, Monika is recruited into the OSS, the young American intelligence service. From there the books fan out across training camps, covert investigations, Bern safe houses, Nazi-occupied cities, and dangerous border crossings.

Michael matters just as much as Monika, even though they are often separated. His wartime path takes him into bomber missions, secret flights, crash landings, prisoner-of-war camps, and rescue operations. The series also grows around a bigger circle of recurring characters, especially Monika's cousin Sarah Graf, whose courage and suffering become central as the books move deeper into Germany and Austria. Oliver, Hans Viertel, and other operatives widen the story further, so the later novels feel like a connected wartime network rather than one person's adventure.

The tone is quick and tense.

Across The Wounded and the Lost, The Courier, The Berlin Girls, The Hard Way, and the later books, the series keeps shifting locations and tactics while staying rooted in the same emotional stakes. Monika has to decide who can be trusted, how far to push a mission, and when a strategic victory costs too much on the human side. The books move through Berlin, Bern, Austria, France, Wales, Salzburg, Mauthausen, and beyond. Some focus on sabotage, some on intelligence gathering, some on survival under capture, and some on the race to stop Nazi weapons projects before they change the war.

What holds it together is the sense that every mission is personal. Monika is not a detached super-spy. She is working while worrying about Michael, Sarah, and the people pulled into her orbit. That makes the action feel grounded, even when the plots move into secret operations and high-level wartime strategy.

Read this one in order, starting with The German Girl. It also works best if you've already read The Lion's Den and, ideally, Maureen Ritter, because the family history and earlier relationships add a lot. If you want the fastest-paced Eoin Dempsey series, this is probably it. It is still historical fiction, but it often reads like a wartime thriller with a family heartbeat underneath.
