Series background & context

Modern Wicked Fairy Tales is Selena Kitt's group of adult romances that reworks familiar stories in contemporary settings. The books share an approach rather than one continuing heroine or household. Recognizable ideas, such as a tower, a beast or a mysterious figure connected with children, become part of modern working lives and relationships. Kitt combines explicit adult romance with suspense and personal conflict, giving each retelling its own cast, central problem and reasons for the characters to hesitate before trusting someone.

Each familiar title opens the door to a different story.

In Rapunzel, Rachel runs a salon in a Chicago high-rise and lives in an apartment at the top of the building. Her private retreat resembles the older tale's tower, but her work connects her to customers and their families. Jake Malden brings his daughter Emma into the salon because she wants to donate her long hair to charity, despite her mother's objections. Rachel's decision to cut it triggers conflict and exposes hidden matters. Her livelihood and growing connection with Jake both become part of what is at stake.

Beauty follows former beauty queen Jolee Mercier after an anonymous letter gives her evidence about her husband's involvement in her father's death. Her husband's response puts her life in immediate danger. After an accident disrupts his plan, she wakes in an isolated northern Michigan cabin, where a masked man known as the beast has rescued her. The setting takes her far from ordinary help. Questions about appearances and trust gain urgency because she needs to understand who can protect her and how to remain beyond her husband's reach.

Pied Piper moves into medical research. Dr. William Pfeiffer is testing a device intended to restore hearing when single mother Haley seeks help for her daughter, Piper. Pressure to bring the device to market clashes with the care the work requires. His developing feelings for Haley create an ethical complication because Piper is part of the study. Mysterious comas among participating children then turn a promising project into a source of fear. The old story's association with children becomes the basis for a modern suspense plot.

The different settings let the series explore more than one kind of vulnerability. Rachel has a business and personal privacy to protect; Jolee needs safety after a betrayal; Haley is trying to help her child. The romantic connection develops alongside those concerns, so the borrowed fairy-tale shape does not remove practical obstacles. Readers can begin with a retelling whose premise interests them, then try another for a separate cast and problem. Familiar titles provide a starting point, while contemporary jobs, family pressures and hidden histories supply the details that make each book its own story.
