Dear Jane

by Mette Ivie Harrison

2020

An Austen-inspired contemporary romance that uses letters, longing, and a knowing modern voice. Harrison plays with the gap between literary ideals and the much messier business of real relationships.

Jane Austen in Heaven

by Mette Ivie Harrison

2020

This playful companion imagines modern love under the long shadow of Jane Austen. It blends literary affection with romantic complication and asks what people really mean when they want an Austen ending.

A knowing nod to Pride and Prejudice, this contemporary romance digs into first judgments and the people behind them. Harrison builds the tension around misunderstanding, attraction, and a harder second look.

A difficult man gets the center of the story in this modern Austen-flavored romance. The book turns on pride, regret, and whether a damaged hero can do the work needed to earn a second chance.

Series background & context

The Modern Jane Chronicles are Harrison's playful, bookish side in full view. Written under the Kjersten Beck name, these novels take their cues from Jane Austen and then carry them into contemporary life. The titles tell you the mood: Dear Jane, Jane Austen in Heaven, The Redemption of Caleb Willoughby, and Second Impressions all sound like conversations with Austen, and that is basically what they are.

These are not strict scene-by-scene retellings. They work more like riffs, companions, or modern echoes. Harrison pulls forward the things Austen still does well, awkward first impressions, pride, misread motives, difficult men, social performance, and the slow shift from judging a person to actually seeing them, then drops those tensions into modern romantic situations. The result is lighter on costume drama and heavier on self-awareness.

The literary wink is part of the fun.

What keeps the books from feeling too clever is that Harrison stays interested in the emotional mechanics of romance. Her characters want love, but they also want dignity, clarity, and a version of adulthood that makes sense. Letters matter, memory matters, and so do the stories people tell themselves about what a good relationship should look like. Austen is the frame, but the feelings are modern.

If you like contemporary romances that know their classics and are willing to argue with them a little, this series is a good landing spot. It is especially appealing for readers who enjoy the afterlife of Austen more than strict historical pastiche.
