It introduces a western Massachusetts homicide detective who is smart, empathetic, and carrying serious personal trauma of her own. Books like Taken to the Grave, Her Daughter's Cry, The Other Mothers, and Her Silent Prayer build on that mix of police work and psychological pressure. People who like procedurals often come for the case, then stay for Jo.

She can shift gears without losing her edge. The Vacation takes a group getaway in Jamaica and turns it into a family nightmare after a child vanishes. The setup is tighter and more claustrophobic than the Jo books, but the same interests are there: secrets, guilt, and the way stress strips people down to who they really are.

Smart women in bad situations are one of her through lines.

More recently she has also published as Michelle Chouinard, with books like The Serial Killer Guide to San Francisco and A Tour to Die For. Those novels lean a little more openly into dark humor and local history, but they still show the same fascination with motive and consequence. Her work has appeared on bestseller lists, and The Serial Killer Guide to San Francisco received a Mary Higgins Clark Award nomination.

She is based in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she writes crime fiction centered on smart, strong women. Outside the books, she has shared her love of coffee, chocolate, nail art, paper crafts, genealogy, tarot cards, Halloween, and zombie apocalypses. She also lives with her husband, three cats, and a dog, which feels like exactly the right household for someone who writes about chaos for a living.
