Series background & context

The Mistresses of the Board Room books follow a close-knit group of women at Thomas Rose Associates, a New Orleans marketing firm run by Dommes who are as sharp in business as they are certain of what they want in the bedroom. The hook is right there in the title. These women are in charge at work, and they are not interested in pretending otherwise anywhere else.

That makes the series feel distinct from the start.

Rosalinda, Abby, Skye, Cyn, and Vera are friends as much as co-workers. Their loyalty to one another gives the books a warm ensemble feel, even when each novel centers on a different romance. You are not just following separate couples. You are spending time inside a female-led community that understands power, ambition, and the cost of holding everything together.

The men who enter these stories are not weak, and that is the point. Hill builds these romances around partners strong enough to stand beside powerful women and, when the dynamic calls for it, kneel for them. In At Her Command, a former Navy SEAL becomes bodyguard to Ros and discovers that service can take on a whole new meaning. In At Her Service, Abby's private battle with mental illness shakes the control she has always relied on. In At Her Call, At Her Pleasure, and At Her Will, the books widen the emotional and social range of the series without losing that same core interest in trust, surrender, and mutual care.

New Orleans gives the whole thing texture.

The city adds heat, sensuality, and a slightly off-center energy that suits the books well. These are contemporary romances, but they do not feel generic. Clubs, offices, bars, old grief, new danger, and long friendship all overlap. The women know how to command a room. The men know that devotion is not the opposite of strength.

Tone matters here, too. The series is explicit and emotionally intense, but it is not cold. Under the power games, there is a lot of tenderness. These books care about trauma, caretaking, family pressure, recovery, and what it means to be seen clearly by someone who does not try to shrink you. That is why they work as more than fantasy setups.

If you like Joey W. Hill's boardroom worlds but want the power center to rest with female Dominants, this is the series to try. The books connect, and recurring friendships matter, yet each romance gets its own full emotional journey. Expect capable women, devoted men, complicated lives, and a version of happily-ever-after that has to be fought for, not just wished into being.
