A Peculiar Peril

by Jeff VanderMeer

2020

Teen naturalist Jonathan Lambshead inherits his grandfather’s cluttered mansion and, with two friends, discovers it hides portals to Aurora, an alt-Earth ruled by Aleister Crowley. Their attempt to help a secret order stop his magical war turns into a wildly comic, reality-bending quest.

Series background & context

The Misadventures of Jonathan Lambshead series begins with a shy, scientifically minded teenager and a very odd inheritance. Jonathan expects to spend his summer quietly cataloging his late grandfather’s crammed English country mansion. Instead, the house turns out to be a maze of secrets, traps, and hidden doors.

Jonathan is not alone. Two classmates, the athletic and funny Danny and her older brother Rack, arrive to help with the inventory. What should be a tedious job quickly veers into danger as strange instructions, impossible rooms, and unsettling relics suggest that Jonathan’s grandfather was involved in something far stranger than eccentric collecting.

At the heart of the house is a connection to Aurora, an alternate Earth where history forked long ago. On Aurora, the occultist Aleister Crowley rules a sprawling empire, conducting a war with mecha-elephants, doomsday engines, and an army of uncanny allies and monsters.(us.macmillan.com) The mansion’s doors function as portals, and the three friends are pulled into this through-the-looking-glass Europe whether they are ready or not.

Once across, Jonathan learns that his family has deeper ties to Aurora than he ever imagined. A secret society known as the Order of the Third Door believes he has a role in keeping the two worlds separate. That responsibility sits uncomfortably on his shoulders, especially as alliances shift and supposed mentors prove unreliable.

The tone of the series is part absurdist comedy, part high-stakes fantasy. Talking animals and vegetables argue with one another, spy games multiply, and even background characters turn out to have agendas. VanderMeer plays with classic portal fantasies while constantly undercutting expectations, so that the story feels both familiar and gleefully strange.

Across the books, readers can expect dense, playful worldbuilding, rapid-fire perspective shifts, and a sense that even the silliest joke might matter later. The threat facing both Earth and Aurora is real, but so are the friendships that form under pressure.

If you like your adventure stories packed with wordplay, bizarre alt-history details, and characters who grow into their roles while never losing their sense of humor, this series offers a long, twisty journey with plenty still left to discover.
