Author bio
Minka Kent grew up in Iowa and later graduated from Iowa State University. She still lives in Iowa, and in author bios she is often described as sharing home life with her husband, three children, and a very spoiled dog.
She has said she cannot remember a time when she was not reading and writing. The books she has mentioned loving early on range from Little Critter to Goosebumps and The Babysitter's Club, which makes a lot of sense once you see the mix in her own work: sharp hooks, fast pacing, and a real interest in what people hide.
She writes in more than one lane.
Under the Winter Renshaw name, she built a big contemporary romance catalog full of enemies-to-lovers sparks, second chances, wealthy families, athletes, and messy emotional timing. Under Minka Kent, she leans into psychological suspense, where ordinary homes, marriages, friendships, and online lives start to feel unstable in all the worst ways.
That split has worked well for her. Her romance novels have sold in the millions, while her suspense novels have grown into a steady shelf of domestic thrillers and twisty standalones. The Memory Watcher, her suspense debut, became an early breakout. The Thinnest Air hit number one in the Kindle store and spent weeks on the Washington Post bestseller list.
A few books give a good feel for what she does best. The Memory Watcher takes a mother's private fixation and pushes it into dangerous territory. When I Was You starts with stolen identity and spirals from there. Unmissing asks what happens when someone long gone suddenly comes back. And Imaginary Strangers shows Kent doing one of her favorite things, building a story around a woman who may understand danger better than anyone around her, but may not be easy to trust either.
Even when the setups are high concept, the worries underneath them are familiar. Who is telling the truth? What do families do to protect themselves? How much of a person can be faked, online, in public, or even inside a marriage? Her books often return to women under pressure, children caught in the middle, secrets that have been kept too long, and the gap between a polished surface and the mess behind it.
Her suspense work has also picked up award attention, including nominations from the International Thriller Writers and the Shirley Jackson Awards. Several projects have moved toward the screen too, including adaptations tied to The Memory Watcher and Unmissing.
What makes her bibliography fun to explore is that it never sits still for long. One shelf gives you dark domestic suspense. The next gives you letters, rivals, football stars, road trips, fake engagements, or a very bad idea that somehow turns into love.
Whether you start with a thriller or a romance, you can usually count on the same thing: a fast-moving story, a strong central hook, and characters whose lives are a lot more complicated than they first appear.
