Author bio
Mike Omer was born in Jerusalem in 1979, the son of two psychologists, and grew up surrounded by conversations about how people think and behave. As a kid he devoured science fiction and fantasy, and a family year in Boston helped him pick up fluent English that would later shape his writing life.
At sixteen he decided to stop just reading stories and write one. The result, a comic fantasy novel published in Hebrew, made him one of the youngest authors at his publisher. A second tongue in cheek fantasy followed and was nominated for a national speculative fiction award, cementing his sense that he could build entire worlds on the page.
He did not move straight into full time fiction. For a while Omer worked as a journalist and social commentator, writing sharp, funny pieces about everyday life and politics. That period taught him how to listen for voice and how to capture a scene in a few clean lines.
Games came next. With a small team he helped create a story heavy role playing game called Misfortune, spending years mapping out branching plots and character arcs. It was a crash course in pacing, choice, and cause and effect, skills that later fed directly into his crime novels.
Before turning to mystery, Omer also wrote for younger readers. His interactive supernatural thriller about a sleepless teen in the strange town of Narrowdale grew into the English language novel Sleepless and its sequels. Those books let him mix eerie suburban settings with anxious, funny teen voices, a balance he would keep chasing.
Omer shifted into crime and suspense with the Glenmore Park mysteries, set in a fictional Massachusetts city. In books like Spider's Web, Deadly Web, Web of Fear, and the novella A Death Not Foretold, he followed a rotating cast of detectives through serial murder cases, online harassment, and crimes that spill from digital spaces into real streets. The series is grounded in procedure but leaves room for dark humor and messy personal lives.
From there he moved to the FBI in the Zoe Bentley trilogy. Starting with A Killer's Mind and continuing through In the Darkness and Thicker than Blood, forensic psychologist Zoe Bentley and agent Tatum Gray track some of his most disturbing killers, including Rod Glover, a predator who has been tied to Zoe since childhood. These books blend tense investigations with an ongoing cat and mouse story that spans decades.
Omer then created Abby Mullen, an NYPD hostage negotiator and survivor of a violent cult. In A Deadly Influence, Damaged Intentions, and A Burning Obsession, Abby’s work on kidnappings, school sieges, and arson murders is tangled up with the charismatic cult leader who destroyed her family. The trilogy explores trauma, belief, and the pressure of talking people back from the brink, and it even brings Zoe Bentley into Abby’s orbit.
More recently he has written standalones such as Please Tell Me, about a child therapist trying to reach a mute kidnapping survivor whose play seems to predict new murders, and Behind You, in which a woman with a reinvented life is forced to relive the night that drove her out of her hometown. Across these books he returns to everyday people forced to confront buried secrets.
Omer’s novels have sold millions of copies in more than twenty languages and have appeared on major bestseller lists. He has received several crime fiction awards, and his work has been adapted for television, including a series based on A Killer's Mind. He now lives in Cork, Ireland, where he writes crime and thriller fiction as Mike Omer and fantasy as Alex Rivers, balancing intricate plots with a dry, human sense of humor and a steady curiosity about why people do the worst things they do.
