If you want the later global stakes: Never Forgive → War of Choice → Hammer of God
If you want a brutal female led spin off: Girl Zero → Zero Day → Kill Zero
If you want a darker police mystery: Dark Peak Kill → Slack Tide Kill
Author bio
Mike Grist is the thriller pen name of Michael John Grist, a British born writer who grew up in North West England. Long before the Chris Wren books found their audience, he was already drawn to broken places, uneasy atmospheres, and stories about people pushed right up against the edge.
He spent more than a decade living in Tokyo, and that part of his life seems to matter a lot to the fiction. While there, he explored and photographed abandoned sites across Japan, the kind of places that feel half forgotten and half haunted. He also wrote about gangs, cults, and urban ruins, which helps explain why so many of his thrillers feel grounded in places that are crumbling, hidden, or just slightly off.
That fascination with the darker corners of the world never really left him.
Grist had been writing for years before the Mike Grist name took off. He has said he finished a novel while at university, and he later built a self publishing career under his own name, Michael John Grist, with science fiction and fantasy books such as The Last and Soul Jacker. In 2019, after trying the traditional route and getting rejected by agents, he self published the first Christopher Wren novels and kept refining them until they found a much bigger readership.
That practical, sleeves rolled up approach is part of his story. He has written openly about rewriting books after publication, tightening pace, reworking openings, and learning what thriller readers actually wanted from a series. It is a very working writer kind of biography, less overnight breakthrough, more persistence, experimentation, and a lot of problem solving.
Readers coming to Mike Grist usually start with Saint Justice, which introduces Christopher Wren, an ex black ops operator with a vigilante streak and a complicated moral compass. Books like No Mercy, Backlash, and Hammer of God build on that mix of action, conspiracy, and personal damage. If you prefer female led thrillers, Girl Zero and Zero Day shift the spotlight to a survivor turned hunter, while Dark Peak Kill moves into darker police mystery territory with Sally Rogers.
Across the books, certain things come up again and again. Hidden systems. Abusive power. People carrying old trauma into new fights. There is often a strong sense of place too, whether that is the American desert, a city in uproar, the Yorkshire moors, or an underworld that looks normal from the street until you step through the wrong door.
He also brings in details from outside fiction. His website bio mentions psychology and martial arts alongside years spent in difficult environments, and that combination fits the novels pretty well. The books are fast, but they are also interested in how fear works, how control works, and what people become when ordinary rules stop protecting them.
These days he writes from London. His blog has also mentioned life there with his wife Su and their young son, along with the daily work of balancing family, exercise, and a very hands on writing career.
It all feels of a piece.
Mike Grist writes thrillers that move quickly, but the life behind them is full of patient work, strange research paths, and years spent looking closely at the kind of places most people hurry past.
