A lot of the series tension comes from that gap between what Garin knows in the field and what the government is willing to believe.

These books are fast, hard-driving political thrillers, but they are not only about explosions and body counts. Kirsanow also likes the machinery around the action: intelligence briefings, rival agencies, back-channel influence, and the way bad decisions made in offices end up costing lives somewhere else. Readers who like covert ops, plausible national-security nightmares, and a capable hero under constant pressure should start with Target Omega and keep going to Second Strike. The books are closely linked, and Garin's world makes more sense in order.
