Author bio

Mike Faricy is a crime writer with one foot in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and the other in Dublin, Ireland. That split life fits his books well. A lot of them move through bars, side streets, police offices, and the parts of a city that look ordinary until they suddenly do not.

Before he settled into writing full time, Faricy had a long list of jobs and near-jobs. He has said he was a soldier, a freelance journalist, a bartender, a seller of designer cakes, and the owner of a painting and decorating company, along with a few other schemes besides.

Writing was not a straight line for him. He wrote for his high school paper and yearbook, kept at it over the years, and eventually finished several manuscripts. After sending out large numbers of query letters and getting nowhere useful, he turned to electronic publishing around 2009 and started putting the work out himself.

That move changed things. Russian Roulette, the first Dev Haskell novel, introduced readers to a St. Paul private investigator who is funny, careless, loyal in odd ways, and almost never as in control as he thinks he is. The Dev books became Faricy's signature series, and readers kept coming back for the mix of crooked jobs, bad decisions, recurring oddballs, and genuine suspense.

He also has a darker side.

In Corridor Man, published under the name Nick James, Faricy follows disbarred attorney Bobby Custer, who is smarter, colder, and much more dangerous than Dev Haskell. That series leans harder into violence and moral rot, but it still shows Faricy's interest in people who live just below the surface of polite society. They are rarely heroes. They are usually warnings.

Ireland matters in his work too. In Welcome, he sends U.S. Marshal Jack Dillon to Dublin on what should be a routine prisoner escort, then strands him in a lively series of cases with the Garda. Those books let Faricy combine fast-moving crime plots with Dublin streets, pubs, and police work. He originally released the Jack Dillon books under the name Patrick Emmett.

Faricy has also written the Hotshot books, which are standalones about desperate low-level schemers, and the newer Yucky Yates series, which begins with former DEA agent Russell Yates starting over as a private investigator. Books like Reduced Ransom! and The Maid show the same thing readers tend to like in his longer series: crooked plans, odd humor, and people who keep talking themselves into trouble.

His settings change, but his interests stay pretty steady. He likes characters who make bad choices for reasons that almost make sense at the time. He likes crime that feels local and personal. And he likes writing about people who are not trying to save the world, just survive the mess they made.

Faricy still spends part of the year in Saint Paul and part in Dublin. He also plays bagpipes with the Brian Boru Irish Pipe Band, which somehow feels exactly right for a writer whose books are this fond of noise, personality, and trouble.
