Author bio

Michael Prescott is the pen name of novelist Douglas Child Borton Jr., born in 1960 and raised in New Jersey. His early interest in movies led him to Wesleyan University, where he studied film and graduated in 1980.

In 1981, he moved to Los Angeles. Before novels became his main work, he freelanced for magazines, worked as an editor and archival researcher, and wrote scripts for independent film producers.

That background shows up in his books. They move quickly, cut between danger and investigation, and often place everyday people in situations that feel suddenly much bigger than they expected.

His first novel took more than five years to write and was sold in 1986. It arrived as Manstopper, a horror story about specially trained attack dogs loose after an accident.

Prescott's early books were published under his own name, Douglas Borton. Those novels included the haunted-house nightmare Dreamhouse, the desert-town terror of Kane, and Deathsong, in which a country singer finds herself caught up in a frightening supernatural threat. In the early 1990s, he also wrote under the name Brian Harper, producing suspense novels such as Shiver, Shudder, Blind Pursuit, and Mortal Pursuit.

The shift changed the rest of his career.

From 1999 onward, his Michael Prescott books focused mainly on crime, psychological suspense, and thrillers. Los Angeles and Arizona appear often, as do police officers, therapists, investigators, victims who fight back, and people whose pasts refuse to stay buried. Stealing Faces follows a killer who discovers someone is watching him. In Dark Places centers on a psychiatrist, a supposedly rehabilitated murderer, and a missing daughter. Riptide gives a disgraced TV psychic one difficult chance to help find a missing girl.

He likes putting ordinary people under enormous pressure.

Prescott also created two continuing crime series. Abby Sinclair is a Los Angeles security consultant who investigates stalkers, while FBI agent Tess McCallum brings a more official approach to their cases. Bonnie Parker, the lead of a later series, is a private investigator on the Jersey shore who is willing to cross lines most investigators would not. The books balance manhunts, personal grudges, conspiracies, and the friction between characters who have very different ideas about what justice requires.

After roughly two decades in traditional publishing, Prescott began releasing older work and new material independently in ebook form. That move brought his books to a new audience and put him on both the New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists. He has also written short fiction and nonfiction exploring survival after death, including The Far Horizon.
