Micaiah Johnson Books in Order

Micaiah Johnson was raised in California's Mojave Desert, a place she remembers through Joshua trees and a community of women who told stories. Those early surroundings stay close to her work: wide desert landscapes, tight communities, and people trying to survive systems that were not built to protect them.

She has said she wanted to be a writer from childhood. As a teenager, she bought a used guide to becoming a novelist at a yard sale, a small act of faith in a dream that did not always look practical.

Johnson studied creative writing at the University of California, Riverside, earning her BA there. She went on to receive an MFA in fiction from Rutgers University-Camden, then completed a PhD at Vanderbilt University. On her mother's side, she is a first-generation high school graduate, a fact that gives the path through higher education real weight.

Her academic work looks at race, technology, and death, both in the past and in the present day. Those questions also turn up in her fiction, but never as a lecture. They arrive through the everyday choices of people dealing with fear, loyalty, money, violence, love, and the need for a safe place to belong.

Her first novel, The Space Between Worlds, introduced Cara, a young woman who can travel between parallel Earths because so many versions of her have already died. The book uses a big science-fiction idea to tell a very personal story about class, trauma, identity, and the cost of getting out of a place that has hurt you.

The novel was Johnson's debut, and it won the Compton Crook and Carl Brandon Awards. It also brought readers into the divided desert world of Ashtown and Wiley City, where wealth, safety, and opportunity are kept behind literal and social walls.

Then came Those Beyond the Wall, which returns to that world through Scales, a mechanic and enforcer in Ashtown. It is a tougher, angrier mystery, built around unexplained deaths and the pressure of keeping a fragile community alive while old harms keep resurfacing.

Johnson's characters are often practical people with messy histories. They want room to breathe, people they can trust, and a future that is not controlled by the powerful. The stories make space for tenderness and found family, even when the danger is close.

Her forthcoming novel, The Unhaunting, shifts into Gothic horror. It follows friends who think they have found a sanctuary in an inherited house, only to learn that a home with no history of tragedy may be hiding something worse. Johnson is based in Brooklyn, and she continues to work as both an author and a scholar.
